Progress update.

Following the Newspace NY Space Sharks pitch, myself (James Wolff), the author of the Space Workbench project, began the long and arduous scientific journey to establish a SWB proof of concept and develop out the detailed system content. Now, in the first week of September of 2015, I am beginning to upload and create the relevant accompanying website content. This includes, now, beginning to develop a team to pursue this concept, which I believe represents a viable commercial new space product.

Why 3D printing in space?

3D printing in space has several advantages over alternative traditional methods. With respect to 3D printing, the ability to create in space, on-demand, provides significant competitive advantage over building cubesats on Earth, subjecting them to the stresses of launch and hypersonic flight, and then deployment on a correct trajectory for deep space applications. Using Space Workbench hardware, any space station or space ship can produce incredibly advanced components and systems, and utilizing new cubesat ion propulsion systems, can achieve the necessary speeds to escape Earth orbit. We believe this will lead to a paradigm shift in access to space by asteroid mining startup companies, which will lead to a thriving United States commercial space industry.
